FRIEDER BUTZMANN

Born 1954 in Konstanz, Germany. Collects sounds, music, noises, impressions, but mostly he doesn’t know if he’s going to make them into music pieces, soundtracks, lectures, radio plays or whole operas. He stretches, shortens, transposes analogue and digital recordings beyond recognition. He mostly works on radio features and teaches at several universities.

COLUMN ONE

Column One was founded in Berlin, 1991 as the IDEOLOGICAL BASIS for an (aesthetic) approach to structures, philosophical ideas & media of the (now) western world. At that time Rene Lamp & Robert Schalinski already had been working together on short-film projects. The philosophical ideas of RADICAL CONSTRUCTIVISM (Paul Watzlawik etc.), the paths of the CUT-UP demonstrators such as W.S. Burroughs, Bryon Gysin & JŸrgen Ploog, the experiments of POP-TERRORISTS like Genesis P-Orridge with Psychic TV & the films of directors like Andrew Tarkowski, Derek Jarman, Ingmar Bergmann, Lars von Trier, Alexandro Jodorowski have had greater influence on the foundation and the work of Column One.

However, the crucial point & the main motivation for the work of Column One is the TOTALISATION OF COMMUNICATION. Meaning: to bring back into consciousness communication in its unavoidable consequence & presence.... thus, it's about decoding information, the utilisation, cutting up & decoding of which is presented to us as REALITY & of what we constantly present to ourselves. In order to succeed in this decoding process Column One utilises existing forms of communication & its media & generally considers everything as raw material, basic element or finished product.

Column One operates as collective. Besides the founding members a changing amount of various members changes from project to project: Andrew Loadman, Jerome Soudan (aka Mimetic), Wojcek Czern (aka Zia Siodma Gora), Jürgen Eckloff (also: Kein Zweiter), Leo Solter (also: Kein Zweiter, Tornow), R.U. Brain-Bridge...

COLLABORATIONS WITH: Artefakt Magazine, Jürgen Ploog, Genesis P-Orridge (Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle), Tochnit Aleph, Never Mind The World, Rex Joswig (Herbst In Peking), Paul Kendall (Mute), Quasister, Pawel Koslowski (Miasto Nie Spalo), Marc Weiser (Rechenzentrum), Silk Saw, and many others.

Many of his compositions were short, hard hitting collages of text and sound with a socially and politically committed content.

Main theme: language

FRANCISCO LÓPEZ

Over the last twenty years Francisco López has developed an astonishing sonic universe, absolutely personal and iconoclastic, based on a profound listening of the world. Destroying boundaries between industrial sounds and wilderness sound environments, shifting with passion from the limits of perception to the most dreadful abyss of sonic power, proposing a blind, profound and transcendental listening, freed from the imperatives of knowledge and open to sensory and spiritual expansion. One of the leading figures of the international experimental underground, he has realized concerts and sound installations all over Western and Eastern Europe, North, Central and South America, Japan and Australia and his work has been released by more than eighty record companies throughout the world.

JÜRGEN ECKLOFF

Everything started with an experiment in 1978. A series of various c`s & u`s & t`s led into C-U-T (or T-U-C backwarded) finaly. After that nothing happened until 1986. And so we bought an accordion (type: "Weltmeister").
"1995 he received a postcard including a small melodie-chip"explains a close friend of Eckloff. So the idea of Rendezvouz Radikal was born. 6 mainly sounding releases were put out until 2000 RR-actions stopped.
2001: "If you´re taking the words - you will loose the sense of it; are you looking for sense you will find no words." (Vladim Orek) The search for located words and dislocated sense determines the following years and isn`t finished yet.

TOM PLATT

In our modern bourgeois world, whose foundations admittedly are
trembling these days, the dilettante and bungler constitutes a kind of
substitute, and the bourgeois person attributes and assigns functions
to him which would actually be every individual's own responsibility.
Due to manyfold decline, however, they are neglected by the majority of
bourgeois people.
Within our society, the dilettante and bungler actually represents the
only type of human being that, unconcerned and widely tolerated by
society, lives for itself, is true to its own nature and thus fulfils a
law that is written in every human being's heart but whose call, for
most people, becomes choked in the dull struggle for daily needs.
